I wasn’t there.

To see the laughter turn into cries,
The smiles turn into agony,
And the mundane turn into a nightmare,
I wasn’t there.
When the kids were on fire,
When the old melted like ice in the sun,
Or when mothers watched their little ones die of thirst,
I wasn’t there.
To witness the worst of mankind,
To see everything turn to ruin,
To watch the world watch as innocents begged and pleaded,
I wasn’t there.
Apparently, people ran for and to help,
Not knowing what had engulfed them,
For me to tell them it’s unsafe to lend a helping hand,
I wasn’t there.
It’s funny how in their last minutes they prayed,
Prayed to their God for strength and mercy,
For I’m sure their God can feign ignorance,
I’m sure he can say, I wasn’t there.
